Since Apple announced their iPad, I’ve been thinking a lot about what features an iTextbook should have. I hesitate to call it an ebook because they’ve been around for a while. My iTextbook would be interactive and designed for the consumers (kids) rather than for the convenience of a printer or the author. The iTextbook would:

Be available in full color. This is a must. Color wouldn’t be overly splashy. Instead, it would be thoughtfully used to enhance the content.

Have adjustable text. Consumers could reduce/enlarge the text as needed.

Have multimedia features to support the content – animation, video, audio.

Allow marking – highlighting (multicolor) of text, annotation (hand-written or typed), bookmarking/outlining, and tagging.

Allow sharing of the marking mentioned above with others, ideally in an overlay or collaborative format (something like what we can already do with Diigo).

Support an integrated platform notebook for snipping of images and other content (like OneNote) and sharing said notebook, perhaps in a wiki-esque form.

Read selected text.

Translate selected text into multiple languages.

Integrate a glossary/dictionary for content-terms.

Be updated frequently – not an every 3-4 year cycle like traditional textbooks.

Allow a “pure” form w/content the publisher provides as well as the ability for consumers to contribute content. This collaborative content could be used selectively – as a consumer, I could select or deselect whose content to include as I interact with my iTextbook. Consumers could add text, audio, video, and relevant hyperlinks. If eventually included in the “pure” form, they would receive credit for their contribution. Content could be moderated in a way similar to Wikipedia.

Load quickly.

Be accessible on multiple devices and platforms. Mac. PC. Android. iTouch. iPad. Netbook. Slate. Laptop. Desktop.

Have ability to download/cache “chapters” for off-line use.

Have ability to contact authors/experts w/questions.

Be available free or at a ridiculously affordable price.

What would you add?
